Renting an apartment with bad credit can be difficult to do. Many apartment complexes allow people with bad credit to rent, but they often charge higher upfront costs and security deposits. The worse your credit is, the more you may be charged before moving in. Here are some things you can do to still get an apartment with bad credit.

Go with a Private Landlord
Most apartment companies are required to do credit checks on potential renters before they can get approved. But if you go through a private landlord who just owns smaller apartment buildings or homes with apartments, you can usually get around the credit check. Look online for people renting out apartments. You will usually find them on places like CraigsList or you can check the classified section in your local newspaper. Sometimes an individual landlord or apartment owner is more understanding and has more flexibility regarding doing credit checks on potential renters.

Find Someone to Vouch for You
If you are moving out of one apartment and into a new one, your new landlord may look past your bad credit if your previous landlord vouches for your dependability. However, you should make sure your previous landlord will say good things about you before you use them as a reference. You can also ask your current or previous employers to vouch for you if they have positive things to say about your character. Your new potential landlord may want to know the stability of your current employment as well to ensure that you will have a steady income to pay the rent.

Have Reasons for Your Financial Woes
If you want to rent an apartment with bad credit, you should have explanations for your financial problems. This will tell your new potential landlord why you have not paid your bills on time or why you have outstanding debts rather than just letting them think that you decided you did not want to pay your bills any more. Have a copy of your credit report with a written explanation for each item.

Get a Co-Signer
Regardless of your credit, a co-signer can be a great way to get that apartment that you want. Your co-signer, however, should have good credit and meet the apartment company’s financial qualifications in order to be accepted. Your co-signer should also know that they will be responsible for any missed rent payments or any other problems if you decide to skip out on your financial responsibilities with the apartment.

Bad credit can be a nightmare for many people. In some cases, it may even keep you from renting a decent apartment. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to convince apartment managers to take a chance on your by allowing you to rent an apartment even with your bad credit.
